For inside tips on banana rum drinks, we spoke to Al Serrano, the bar manager at News Cafe, a 24-hour bar located directly across the street from one of Miami's famed beaches.
Al Serrano's Picks
Electric Banana
How do you make it?
In a tall glass with ice add:
2 ounces banana rum
1/2 ounce white cacao
1/2 ounce amaretto
1 dash creme de banana
1 ounce heavy cream
Shake to blend.
How would you describe its taste?
Creamy with a kick.
When is it best to drink?
Early evening to get the night started.
Who drinks it?
Mostly ladies, but anyone with a sweet tooth.
Banana Russian
How do you make it?
2 ounces banana rum
1 ounce Kahlua
1 ounce heavy cream
Add ice to highball glass and stir ingredients in.
How would you describe its taste?
Dark and smooth.
When is it best to drink?
When nothing else comes to mind and you want to try something unusual.
Who drinks it?
A non-conformist.
King Kong
How do you make it?
2 ounces banana rum
1 ounce coconut rum
1/2 ounce Midori
2 ounces pineapple juice
1 dash Coco Lopez
Add ingredients to a tall highball glass and shake violently.
How would you describe its taste?
Sweet, strong and exotic!
When is it best to drink?
When you want a fun buzz.
Who drinks it?
Spring breakers! It’s a drink young adults like.
Banana Colada
How do you make it?
2 ounces banana rum
Fresh pineapple chunks
1 banana
1 dash Coco Lopez
Add ingredients into a blender with ice. Blend until smooth and float dark rum on top.
How would you describe its taste?
A tropical island elixir.
When is it best to drink?
In the morning, when a fruit salad won’t do!
Who drinks it?
A cruise ship passenger would love these.
